Wells Pottery, Somerset, was established in 1961 by the highly regarded husband-and-wife ceramicists Geoffrey Barfoot (1918–2009) and Olive Barfoot (1923–2013). Alongside operating a successful commercial workshop, the couple were celebrated local educators who dedicated decades to teaching the art of ceramics across the region.
The studio is well-known for its mastery of traditional sgraffitoed slipware at a time when industrial potteries were shifting to mass production. Hand-thrown earthenware was coated in contrasting slips then stylized, organic floral motifs and fluid geometric patterns were carved out, defining the Barfoots’ signature 1970s aesthetic.
