Another new species – Lesser Spotted Woodpecker!

Last weekend we were out ringing with Geoff at Renishaw Park.  51 birds were processed altogether and two Mute Swan colour rings were read.  The other birds caught included tits, Chaffinches and Robins, but unfortunately no Kingfishers, though one did fly right past the end of the net!

We were sure we had heard a drumming Lesser spotted Woodpecker earlier on in the morning whilst we were setting the nets up and at around 10 o’clock, I saw one on a branch amongst a mixed tit flock.  Finally I have now seen all 3 British species of woodpecker!  Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough with my camera so no photos; fingers crossed we’ll be lucky and we’ll see another this coming weekend!
